Great interview. I just got the trade of Dark Nights and just finished Weeks' three issue story. While reading through it three things hit me:
1. Weeks really likes Born Again.
2. Weeks really likes Jesus.
3. Weeks draws one heck of a Daredevil.
With regard to the first two I was almost put off a little at first. Some of the homages to Born Again are almost a bit too much with page structure and actual dialogue ("Never give up", etc.) being lifted right out of Born Again.
I also was a bit put off by the overt Christianness of the issues. Weeks is hardly subtle with all the bible quotes, title, etc.. As a non-believer who loves Daredevil I've never seen Matt as a particularly religious person. Whether that's because I want to identify with him and therefore I impose my own (non)beliefs on him or whether I'm right that he, traditionally, isn't much of a religious guy is up for debate. In either case I've always been bothered by writers sneaking a bunch of Jesus stuff in.
That said, by the time I finished the story I came around and just accepted (and, in fact, appreciated) that Weeks was a religious guy who loves Born Again telling a Daredevil story in a way that was important to him. It was only today that I went back and read the interview and it's great to discover that that was basically his intention. Great stuff.
And yeah, besides JRJR, Weeks really was the Daredevil artist of my youth and, wow, is he great. It was fantastic to see Weeks' Daredevil again. He's way, way up there with the best of them. _________________ JC
