First, a note to those who like the Director's Cut: have you all lost your minds? Honestly. I've taken a lot of flack for bashing the DC even though I haven't seen it so when an opportunity to see if for free came up I figured I should at least sit down and watch it.
To be fair, I think it was pretty obvious that I wouldn't like the DC. So it should come as no surprise that I didn't. What was surprising (to me at least) is just how bad it is. While watching it I couldn't help but think two things: 1) this is awful and 2) I can't believe the things people say about this piece of crap.
And what do people say? I feel like the party line is: it's a much more coherant movie. People mention enhanced character developement and more realism. In the face of actually watching the DC, I find these comments absolutely mind boggling. I feel like people who like the DC usually do so for fairly vague reasons. Here are some concrete complaints:
1. Daredevil and Elektra...I Hardly Knew Ya.
So MSJ cut out the sex scene. Why? Who knows. What I do know, however, is that by cutting out that scene he made it so that Matt and Elektra barely knew each other. With the sex scene in, there's some suggestion that Matt and Elektra spent at lease some time together. With it out, their relationship is absurd. Consider that in the DC we see almost the entirety of their relationship. A relationship that is crazy, crazy brief. Think about it. They meet in the coffee shop. Have the playground fight. Meet again on the street and go to Matt's roof. Have one dance at the ball. And then her dad dies and he goes to her funeral. This is nuts. They barely know each other. The only "gap" where more could have happened is in the space between the street and the roof. Yet, the script makes it unlikely that there was that much time in between. They meet and Matt says "I want to show you something". Cut to roof "I want to show you this". So, prior to the funeral Matt and Elektra have seen each other for less than 15 minutes tops. They just met. The rest of their relationship makes no sense at all. If you're keeping score here, that's less character development. Not more.
2. Who is THAT?
If you didn't find Maggie's appearance jarring do you know what that means? It means your a DD fan. Her appearances are so wildly out of context and make so little sense I can barely imagine what a non-DD fan would think. And it wasn't, like, a well hidden nod to the fans. It just suddenly cuts to the past and a nun is there. What?
3. Rape - Beating - Murder
Okay, so JQ rapes a woman. So Daredevil KILLS him. Wow. DD means business. A couple scenes later, DD hears a gunshot and a woman crawling across the ground dying. So he goes to sleep. Wait...what? Then when he's with Elektra he hears someone getting beaten up so he leaves Elektra. So the worst thing you can do is rape someone. Murder isn't even worth getting out of bed for and stopping someone from being beaten up is top priority. So much consistancy.
4. Good Cop, Bad Blind Guy
So Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer who sometimes using his DD persona to collect evidence. Well, sometime. Because sometimes he goes and roughs up cops as Matt Murdock. That scene, which is not in the TC, is RIDICULOUS. Leaving aside the blind thing. The scene is about a lawyer roughing up a witness in an ongoing trial.
5. Coolio
This subplot, as suspected, is embarassing. Coolio is just awful and his "I'm constantly stoned" thing borders on racial sterotype. Plus, to no one's surprise, the subplot makes no sense. Apparently Coolio was too stoned to remember anything....except for the fact that he didn't do it. How would he know that?
And of course all the problems with the TC are still around. I gather the fights have been editted to be "mroe brutal" but I really couldn't tell. Oh yeah, and Bullseye says the F-word in a moment that just screams "look mom! I can swear".
Ridiculous. I can't believe I sat through it. It's worse than the TC. _________________ JC

Thanks JC. It's good to hear some criticism of specific aspects of the Director's Cut. I still haven't seen it and never wanted to. Now I know I wasn't missing anything. |

Thanks jc.
Five solid points that add up to a bad movie. And, that's on top of the other crap from the TR.
It's funny how you clearly state your case for this being a bad film (like the TR was). You give specific examples to make your point, yet those that "love" the DC (the "real movie" as some like to say) simply say "Oh, the character development was so much better!, It's much better than the TR!" From what you point out, it seems that this version only adds more illogical holes to the plot. Fact is Elekta and Matt hardly knew each other in the TR, sounds like they are basically total strangers in this version.
Thanks for saving me two hours.

I have only watched it once (haven't had the urge to see it a second time) and I still believe that adding more character development to the movie did make it somewhat better. Although you can see JC's argument that the character development they DID add wasn't that great either. But I still don't think it was a good movie though and it was a very poor interpretation of the DD character and the storylines. It might have been MSJ version he really wanted to make but he still struck out. It still has all of the problems to it that the TC had.
At least with the DC I was just somewhat annoyed when I watched the DVD. When I watched the Theatrical on DVD I was yelling at my televison set the whole time I was so unhappy with it. _________________ "This isn't hell, but you can see it from here." -The Crow |

sorry but the DC is alot better than the real movie...
The part where the Kingpin snaps and kills his bodyguards is grreat.
WHy take the maggie thing so seriously? She's there just cause. Its a flashback and a dream.
Did you not realize that the woman he noticed being raped/killed
a)he was to late to save her, he can't save everyone and
b)That was Lisa Tazio, the woman in the subplot
Also the scenes with Jon Favreau are better, better dialogues, better jokes,
most of all
MUCH Better fight scenes.
After seeing DD vs Kingpin in theatrical and DD Vs Kingpin in DC
WDF were they thinking with the theatrical?
You sound upset because you didnt get to see softcore jennifer garner porn
the dc is a full point better than the theatrical, neither are anywhere near as good as say Batman Begins, but the DC is decent... |
