Well, we were right.

Apparently the latest oversized hardcover of New Avengers has an introduction by Brian Michael Bendis and he admits DD was supposed to be Ronin.

From poster Brandon191 on the Bendis Board, who read the intro and paraphrases:

"Daredevil was initially supposed to be Bubblehead/Ronin originally and he told a reporter that confidentially. The reporter burned him and put it in his article. Bendis then thought that Draedevill wouldn't really work because of Brubaker taking over the book and by the time he really fleshed out the character it was clear to him Ronin was really supposed to be Echo. He apologized a million times in the Introduction for lying to everyone.

He also says that there is a Skrull in the first issue."

So there you have it.

I remember reading that article, and it specifically said that the character had recently had a feature film, so that was a dead giveaway, along with the hint about the nunchucks.

Glad it didn't happen, but always curious how it might have changed the storyline.

I think it was always clear that DD was originally intended to be Ronin (remember those preview pages of a title which featured a crossover NA guest-appearance, which showed Daredevil with them - only to have him mysteriously removed later?). It would have been interesting to see how he worked on the team, and I'd have preferred him to Echo (who hasn't really done anything noteworthy).

I'm surprised that Bendis would "spoil" the story in the first NA hardcover though - it doesn't even contain the Ronin-based issues, does it?

I don't know how this was supposed to work. Wasn't it Bendis who put Matt in jail? Wasn't that always his plan? If Murdock was supposed to be in jail, how was he supposed to be helping out the avengers, let alone be keeping tabs on the Japanese underworld?

The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.
