The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

I have really enjoyed the Fisk-less days. But maybe Brubaker will prove me wrong again.

I second that. I really like the Kingpin. I enjoyed him in Spidey back in the 60's and 70's and I loved how he became the #1 nemesis of DD (I feel moreso than Bullseye). But familiarity can breed contempt, as they say, and you can go to the well too often (sorry I'm overdosing on cliches). I'd rather have a longer break from ole KP, but I haven't yet lost faith in Mr. Bru and hopefully, Fisk's quick return will make sense and lead into some fresh stories.

I'm willing to bet that this is due to the TBP market. That's the reason to keep buying individual issues....TBP's are killing creativity IMO.

So, I guess we have two different complaints here... arcs being "shut close" after six issues and arcs not being sufficiently closed after six issues. Hmm....

Either way, are the stories geared toward the TPB market? Sure, I think that's pretty obvious, but the longer-reaching plot elements are still definitely there and I think that's great.

As for the deus ex machina comment, I understand where you're coming from JC, in light of your reviews of Bru's work, but I do think you're using the term incorrectly. Just saying.

The two complaints actually tie in with one another: What's the point of saying "this is a six part story" if the story behind it isn't resolved in six issues?

Well, I'm obviously massively bais (since I only buy trades) but I don't think it's fair to blame trades. There's no doubt that Marvel is actively shoehorning everything into six issue arcs so that they can print the trades but that's Marvel's deal, not the format's. Take Fables for example. Some of the trades are longer, some are shorter as the stories need. Some trades are made up of multiple arcs (say a three story arc with a two issue story and then a one shot). There's no reason at all that writers can't just write comics like they used to and then have them collected in trades. It's Marvel's cookie cutter approach to everything that is hurting creativity.

In a related note: buying the floppies won't help. It's not that Marvel wants to sell trades over floppies. They want to sell trades AND floppies. So no matter how many single issues you buy they will still gear everything towards eventual trade release as well.

I think you're right. Well, I'm using it broadly, like, to mean anytime a contrived ending comes out of nowhere. That said, I think Vanessa really was a classic Deus Ex. A character who appears out of nowhere with the power to fix everything. You could have basically replaced her with Doctor Strange and you wouldn't even have had to change the script.
