I don't know. I've always thought he was a little cliche. Well, that's not true. When I was younger I thought he was awesome. He was all cajin and his eyes glowed and he had little gloves and a trench coat. He was an anti-hero with a dark past! In retrospect it seems like all the reasons I used to like him in my teens have become all the reasons I'm a little doubtful of him now. Assassin's Guild? Theives Guild? The whole thing just sort of has the questionable mark of the 90s on it. It's not that he's a necessarily bad character (although he would have been much cooler if he really was the third Summers brother as originally intended) but I'm just a little surprised that he's at the top of anyone's list. In similar news: rgj? Iceman? Really? Of all the X-Men out there who likes Iceman?

Same thing for jimdare's pick of Rorschach. I mean, you know he's basically a simple minded (and arguably evil) facist right? And again with the trench coats.

Well, as far as simple minded fascists go, he's the gold standard Smile.

Well, to be honest, I really like Iceman because of the Spiderman and His Amazing Friends cartoon of the 1980s. I understand that nothing has been really specataularly written for Iceman in the comics (although, I seem to recall a cool story in X-Factor where Icmean had to go up against some Japaneese? guys becuse of his grilfriend at the time) and he's really been an afterthought. Considering his powers, that a shame. I don't really read anything with Iceman nowadays because Marvel has given him this stupid look with jagged ice hair and, what's this?, a bandana!?

So sure, jc, I can understand your bewilderment. All I can say is . . . Spiderman and his friends, with superpowers that defend!

Ah, that makes sense. And I will grant you that Iceman's powers are pretty cool. I think in recent years they've been kinda amped up when some writer realized that creating ice would actually be some pretty special. I.e. it's not that he can create ice, it's that he can slow molecules down to the point that they freeze. So, in fact, he's massively powerful.

As for the bandana, I think that's only Ultimate Iceman. See? It's Ultimate! Bandanas are ultimate!

Heads up, people! The "comic book character constabulary" is on duty! Wink

Rorschach's not exactly "Nobel prize" material to be sure, but there's no questioning his duty towards his former teammates, and his dogged conviction and determination to find out who's killing them. Sure, he's somewhat of a "loose cannon" of sorts; kinda reminds me a bit of Russell Crowe's "Bud White" character in "L.A. Confidential" sans the "psychological certifiability" which certainly plagues Rorschach.

"Evil"? Are you serious? (He can't be serious) Sure, he's "psychologically messed-up" no doubt, but evil?..."Fascist"? He's too much of a "wild, rabid dog" chasing (initially)shadowed enemies (between unassuming cars passing with their "teasing wheels" a-rollin') to even understand the "concept" of fascism (remember, you called him "simple-minded"). But, despite his "challenged-intelligence" and untethered penchant for "rough-housing", he still has a discernible intuition and integrity that endears him as a character.

As for the "trenchcoat"? Come on, along with its inseparable fedora, and titular mask, it's a "cool look", man. And it's apt as well, considering that he's basically in "detective mode" throughout the story, which kinda belies his alleged all-out "simple-mindedness" really. Clearly, he's as "hard-boiled" as ever a character like him has been; he's ugly, solitary, uncongenial, morally-ambiguous (but NOT "evil"), but he's not devoid of redeemable characteristics that, given the narrative's context, justify his actions, I feel, in the end, even unto his own sacrifice, despite its "admirable stupidity". Cut him some slack, dude. Smile

Grant Morrison on Rorschach:
Of all the Watchmen characters, people love Rorschach most because he's the real superhero. He's the one who wouldn't let you down.
