How dark should Daredevil be?

Most people like the noir feel that Frank Miller created for DD, but many people also thought DD has been too dark for a long time. A lot of people seems to like the first issue Mark Waid wrote that was more light hearted. So how dark should Daredevil be? What should the middle ground be between Silver age silliness and uber dark angst be? Could a serious story that pits Daredevil against Stilt-Man work, for example?

For that example? No.

It's simply time for what Mark Waid is doing. Daredevil will be as dark or light as it needs to be.

Some say this is too light, some say Bendis/Brubaker were too dark. I say everything Matt's gone through has lead him to this point.

Besides, Matt HAS been dark for so long that him kissing the mob boss's daughter and sensing tail almost seemed out of character. There was a time where he was madly into the ladies, it just got him into trouble.

The art isn't as dark, colour-wise, but even in the first issue I feel there was some darkness. I'd wager Matt is just forcing himself, positively so, into trying to push beyond the darkness and live happily. He isn't happy, deep down, I don't think. I think he believes he is, but I don't believe he actually is.

This is what Daredevil needs now.

You could go on and on and write a paper but i'll just simply say that it gets really good when it's almost to the point of suicidal because it strengthens "never give up". When he's at his worst he shines his best and fights to dig out of the grave. That's just my short view.

While I like the 'dark' DD story-lines, I would like to see a bit if 'throwback' to the early Silver age DD / Matt Murdock persona. I like a mixture and enjoyed seeing the basic Foggy Nelson / Matt Murdock relationship in issue number 1 of the new series.

Totally agree with everything you said. I think Waid and company are doing a great job balancing light and dark. It feels more like Miller's run than anyone else that's come along in my opinion.

When people think Miller, they usually only think about Born Again or the later parts of the Elektra saga that were pretty grim. But the rest of his run had a fair bit of light and, dare I say it, comedy. Go read "Guts" or anything involving Turk and you'll see.

I'm not saying Waid is aping Miller, Waid is clearly doing his own thing, and I know it's very early in the run but I think his balance is the closest to Miller's balance of light and dark and will only get better.

I think it says something about the strength and longevity of the character that he is able to showcase and alternate between both extremes as well as finding middle ground between the two.

I find nothing wrong with the dark stories, but it's nice to read fun, light stories as well. A balance between the two needs to be established, which Waid seems able and willing to do.

The problem with some of the bad DD stories isn't that they're "dark," or that their degree of "darkness" is excessive. It's that they're really, really, really bad stories. If they'd been good stories or great ones, no one would be complaining about their "darkness" (or, at least, no one whose opinion would be worth much consideration).

Of course, one could try to make the same argument about lighter-weight DD stories, but it wouldn't hold (and not just because exactly zero such stories number among the great DD tales). The darkness of Daredevil isn't arbitrary. It is inherent in and flows from the concept. It's thematic, an obvious and natural expression of the character and his world. Gene Colan recognized that, visually speaking, years before Miller started writing it that way. Daredevil is an avenger (not to be confused with an Avenger) who lives in perpetual darkness. He was born (and Born Again) of violence, corruption, evil, and his life's singular mission is doing everything in his power to stem a tide of same he will never be able to stem, never be able to stop, but he'll damn well keep trying to do so until his dying breath. A devil who does the frequently very ugly work of the Lord, if you will. These are very romantic notions--"romantic" in the oldest sense of the word--and that dark romanticism is one of the elements that was used to lift DD out of that poor-man's-Spider-Man rut and bring him into his own. Trying to strip it away to take a huge step backwards to a time when no one had any unique, coherent vision for him at all, is the very definition of "misguided."

I'm 100% with you on that. I think Matt is trying to be on his light side right now but sooner or later we all know that his dark inner demons will come back out!! Wink
