|
|
As an aspiring DD comic completest I enjoy collecting the rare and wonderful variant covers, and even the reprints that have come decades after the originals. I'm guessing there are a few others out there like me, attempting to collect them all, or at least those with an interest in collecting DD comic books, and may have some issues in their personal collections that can help verify the actual existence of additional variants.
Since I have collected quite a number of issues, including many cover variants, reprints, and DD appearance issues, I'm hoping to contribute to the site (with the help of Kuljit) cover (and possibly indicia) images for these which can help others identify them (as well as confirm their existence). I am hopeful that others can contribute to these "DD Completist Corner" topics as well, and help fill in missing comics that I do not own and cannot confirm exist.
I consider this the first of many DD Completest Corner topic threads, as I hope to cover the DD-related action figure reprint comics, the U.K. / foreign variants, various appearances in other comic titles, etc... which can help every level of completest with additional information that is out there.
Now to the actual thread of this topic: |

For many decades the Marvel Comics were issued in both "newsstand" and "direct market" editions, and earlier in that history, you could tell the difference by simply looking at the Issue Number block (the old, diamond vs square), or the at the barcode (or where the UPC barcode would normally be).
But in the run of Vol. II (or Vol. 2) of Daredevil, from issue #16 (from everything I can gather, it started at issue 16, but I don't have a newsstand copy of #15 to confirm... anyone?) through #25, Marvel took a bizarre change to the cover of the newsstand version of Daredevil, titling it Marvel Unlimited featuring Daredevil. If you look at the indicia it is the same as the direct edition, but they had variant covers. In addition, they didn't list the issue number on the covers, this behavior continue even past Issue 25 for the newsstand edition, for quite a number of issues (but not all) to Issue 44. I have the newsstand Issue 45, and except for the barcode, it looks identical to the direct edition.
What I find interesting, is that both the Official Overstreet Price Guide and Comic Buyer's Guide Checklist & Price Guide do not list all of these issues, but they do mention some (and here's to hoping they check out manwithoutfear.com someday and correct their guides... or who knows, maybe when we can prove to them that they exist, we can give them the information to make their guides more complete.) Overstreet 38th Edition Price Guide only mentions #18, 19, 21, 22 "Marvel Unlimited Featuring..." issues, and the #41 full-price newsstand edition variant. The 2010/16th Edition of the CBG Checklist & Price Guide only mentions #16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 37(??) "unlimited" variants and #36 & 37 "No #" variant issues.
Here are the newstand DD Vol. 2 variant cover issues I have (*) or suspect (??) exist:
#16 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in blue / white), No issue #
#17 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in blue to white fade), No issue #
#18 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in red to white fade), No issue #
#19 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in cyan to white fade), No issue #
#20 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in yellow), Also changed Marvel Knights header from Red (direct edition) to Yellow, and Daredevil title logo from white with yellow shadow to green with black shadow, No issue #
#21 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in orange), No issue #
#22 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in orange to white fade), No issue #
#23 - * - Marvel Unlimited (large, in orange to white fade), Also changed Daredevil title logo from orange fade to light blue, No issue #
#24 - * - Marvel Unlimited (small, blue to white fade), No issue #
#25 - * - Marvel Unlimited (small, white / orange), No issue #
#26 - * - No Issue Number
#27 - * - No Issue Number
#28 - * - No Issue Number
#29 - * - No Issue Number
Note: #30 Newsstand Edition has issue number and looks identical (except barcode) to the Direct Edition - I have a copy of both editions.
#31 - * - No Issue Number
#32 - * - No Issue Number [Note: Corrected from original post.]
#33 - ? - I don't know if a No Issue Number exists, but I suspect that it does. Can anyone confirm?
#34 - ? - I don't know if a No Issue Number exists, but I suspect that it does. Can anyone confirm?
#35 - * - No Issue Number
#36 - * - No Issue Number
#37 - * - No Issue Number
#38 - ? - I don't know if a No Issue Number exists, but I suspect that it does. Can anyone confirm?
#39 - ? - I don't know if a No Issue Number exists, but I suspect that it does. Can anyone confirm?
#40 - ? - I don't know if a No Issue Number exists, but I suspect that it does. Can anyone confirm?
#41 - * - No Issue Number, Full $2.99 Price, No "Only 25c" circle on cover (The Direct Edition was a special "Only 25 cent" version, It has the "Only 25c" golden circle at the top that covers the "T" and "S" in the Marvel Knights header.)
#42 - * - No Issue Number
#43 - * - No Issue Number
#44 - * - No Issue Number
And I believe that's where it stops, as I have #45 into the 50's newstand editions, and they all have their issue number on the cover and look identical (with UPC barcode exceptions) to their Direct Edition counter parts.
I am working to scan all of the covers I have, and send them to Kuljit so he can maybe add them to the site somewhere.
If you have any additional information on these, especially the ones I can't confirm, or have any questions/comments on the issues I do have, please post below.
Take Care,
--Coop

Thanks for the post darematt, and I can't wait to see what "Spain" has to offer in the form of localized versions.
I did happen to pick up an old (from the 70's or early 80's maybe?, no indicia so I don't know for sure) copy (#24) of "Dan Defensor" a Barcelona Spain Spanish version of Daredevil off of eBay. It would be fun to discuss this further in another thread, and maybe identify what standard issue it is reprinting (El Doble Siniestro appears to be the villian). This is the kind of finds that us completest love to uncover... but so far I haven't found any information about these issues, when they were released, and how many of them there are out there (and how easy/difficult they may be able to obtain in their country of origin). Again, post for another DD Completest Corner topic thread.
Regarding this topic, I emailed Kuljit cover images for the variants #16 - 23, but they are currently too large for putting up and will need some image adjustments before they make sense to put on the web site.
Adios Amigos,

Hello rwcoop and guys, that issue you say (Dan Defensor # 42) belongs to the first issue of Marvel Comics in Spain. This comic has release date of early 1971 and it is (the Doble Siniestro) Stunt Master and the cover is an interpretation of the Daredevil # 59, here drawn by Spanish artist Rafael Lopez Espi (on the cover was still DD drawing on his yellow costume. The interior was black and white. Contains inside Daredevil #58-59). The paperback format 25x15cm. This edition (I have the privilege of having it) is 48 issues.
I also like that these issues could talk in a more appropriate and specific thread.
Sorry for my bad English.
See you later.

Thanks to Coop for sending along some of the images... I've got them into the variants section for Volume 2 now and will add them to the issues summary pages when I get some time. _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Thanks so much K. for putting up the images, they look great.
I believe you should also have the issue 20 variant image as well. I sent it first attached to an early email prior to sending any of the others.
Hoping to be able to scan the rest next week... as well as start topics on the Spanish and Action Figure/Legends reprint issues for Vol.1

So, even though I haven't aquired a 'Direct Edition' version of #32, from the screen shot here at manwithoutfear.com and from another cover image I have seen on one of my favorite online stores, it does appear that there is a difference between the Direct Edition (it has the issue number "#32" after the Daredevil logo) and the Newsstand Edition (missing cover #). |

|

Finally finished scanning in the newstand variant cover images and sent them to Kuljit. He has been so quick to put the other ones up I felt bad at how long it was taking me to get them scanned in.
Still searching for confirmation on those ?? issues above. I have searched a few online comic shops as well as eBay and have been unable to confirm them myself.
Anyone have Comic Collector Live or Comicbase to see if they have them in there? If you have any other ideas of where to look I'd love to hear it as well.
Take Care,

I would like to pass the information in this thread to the various comic book price guide publishers/authors, anyone have any idea on who and how to contact: Comics Buyer's Guide or Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide?
Thanks,

Thanks Kuljit for putting up the Vol. 2 Newsstand variants.
Looks like you were able to confirm (via the cover images) for #34, 38, 39, and 40. No luck with #33?!
Time to do some searching and see if we can find a newsstand edition of #33.
Best Regards,

Many thanks to Coop for sending along all these pics. Here's a larger gallery of all the editions (so far) and I'm going to make a news item for all of this once I get time tonight.

Man, I know I am super late on this but I recently came across Newsstand issues 1-13! Didn't know they existed until I compared them to some of my former direct editions. |

Hi Caleb, thanks for the contribution to the thread. It's good to know that there are newsstand editions starting at issue #1 (not that I'm surprised, but good to know).
I finally purchased a few more of the missing newsstand editions I was missing, including #33 (which is the odd one in the run, because the newsstand edition "does" have its number.
