Beautifully rendered ham-fisted garbage.
I gave it a 2/5. The 2 is for the art. |

So Elektra and is going to play Batman now. Great. I find Elektra less likable the more she's on panel which sucks because I actually wanted some development with her and Matt rather than typical moth to the flame relationship. All she does bitch about the people of Hell's Kitchen and how're they're weak and this and that. Honestly this whole prison thing just feels unnecessary. It's just a way to replace the title character with another minority or female(I'm a black dude btw). Matt shouldn't be in prison. Cell Block D was a lot more interesting.
2/5. The two for the art. |

I don't agree with the above criticisms of Elektra. You can't reasonably ask her to act nice, because historically she hasn't been nice. Chip Zdarsky is writing her true to character, and I appreciate that.
The stuff with Butch and Mike -- I'm trying to give this a chance. I really am. I can see the brewing tension between Fisk and Izzy Libris getting somewhere good, but I still hate Mike, and Butch's existence still makes no sense. It's the stupidest thing to come out of Soule's run, and I wish we were past it.
I liked how intelligently Matt fought the other prisoners. I enjoyed the story of how Foggy danced to confuse some bullies in college.
But I resent the way the issue ends. I resented how Marvel entitled the final Soule arc "The Death of Daredevil," so now I resent this. I'm hoping it's just a stunt, and that someone inside the prison fixes him up well. If it's not a stunt, that is a very unceremonious way to go out, and it kind of sucks.
Some here are accusing Marvel of playing identity politics here. I'm trying to resist going there -- I think minority groups have gone unrepresented in media too long, and white guys like me have had an unreasonably great time at the feast while others have starved. But it seems kind of dumb to replace one of your only disabled superheroes with someone completely able.
Chip Zdarsky still made this worth reading, but I had problems with this issue. I gave it a 3. |

Elektra is everything Daredevil is not and she's unlikable in the role as protector of Hell's Kitchen. She was better off as Elektra. And as a black fan I have strong opinions about how Marvel handles diversity. I'll refrain. |

I like that we get a lot more time with Elektra as Daredevil and to see her worldview. She's someone who has more or less abandoned moral philosophies and sees everything as strength and weakness, which is what we saw of her when she first appeared in Daredevil #168. It also occurs to me that we have a female Daredevil and a female Kingpin, essentially.
I think the other big interesting thing is Mike Murdock filling in for Matt Murdock. He's definitely not someone to trust so I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes.
The Daredevil prison story this week - it was interesting, but I'll see where it goes. I liked the Foggy story, though.

I'm not a big fan of prison stories, and this fact may have altered my view on this story, but...
Well, Elektra is not a nice but a violent woman who kill. So sje's not out of character.
I think that Devil in cell block D worked very well because it was a five issue story. For this story, Chip Zdarsky want to have it a way longuer story. And he want it to be both Matt and Electra story, and that's a big part of the problem, I think.
Because people like me wants to see what happens to Matt, and they are reduced to a part of the issue.
Same for the people who are curious about Elektra as Daredevil.
Do you understand what I mean ? If your story follow the progression of Matt and Fisk, no problem.
If your story follow, as main characters, Matt in prison, Elektra as Daredevil, and Fisk as the evil mayor, you reduce the time for each in your issue, since they are the characters that lead the story.
Now, if you add Mike Murdock (a strange and not very wise move) and his buddy, you have an overcrowded story that will move very slowly. Elektra and Matt, one of them is way too much and hurt the other developpment.
Chi Zdarsky wants to please both Elektra and Matt fans, but he please neither in fact |
