Did anyone read the Powerless mini-series (the one starring DD, Spidey and Wolverine without their superpowers)? If so, what did you think of it? I'm just curious to see whether it's worth checking out.

I've read it. And it's very much worth checking out. It has a very strong story and is better then many of the what if story lines in the past. It's definently worth checking out.

While I'm generally not enthusiastic about alternative timeline/universe stories (Which often leave you wishing to come back to the regular universe), I must say that "Powerless" was a rather accomplished "What if"... And actually managed to say at least to me- something new about characters as over-exposed as Spiderman and Wolverine, which is quite remarkable.

I think you would like reading it.

I ordered this TPB, as I said I would, and read it yesterday. You guys were right, it was really good! After reading some people's reviews of the series elsewhere, I would say that I disagree with the point a lot of people were making in saying that the characters were too much like their usual selves. I didn't feel that way at all. They were certainly recognizable as themselves, but I think it was a nice balance for the most part.

For anyone who reserves a special place in their hearts for Matt Murdock (with or without his powers), it was a really depressing read, though. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, but man, that was some heavy stuff. The ending aside, I wasn't completely comfortable with some of the self-pity aspects of "powerless Matt." Sure, if you're going to go blind and lose your father to senseless violence, it's probably a whole lot more manageable if you get some nifty superpowers as part of the deal, but still. He certainly came across as really unhappy, although far from powerless I might add. Then again, his life isn't exactly a picnic even with superpowers, so maybe that's true to the character, after all.Wink

All in all, a very good read though, and a very emotional one at that. I might have to read it again in a couple of days when I've finished digesting it.

Well... yes! But still a good read... And anyway it seems to be Matt's fate to suffer a lot, so maybe it was inevitable. (again: I'd like to see Matt being a bit happy for a while, much as his being unhappy makes for powerful stories Wink )

What I liked about the series is that a de-powered Matt could be, still, an heroic man... in spite of some human flaws, which makes his heroism even greater. Oh, and there was a bit that I loved: Foggy being a boxing sparring for Matt... even Matt as a de-powered blind guy is a better boxer than the Fogster, LOL

I couldn't agree more! I thought that was great too. It isn't even that unrealistic when you think about it, as long as their bodies are close enough together. The whole body contact premise is the reason that quite a few blind people actually hold black belts in sports like judo...

Anyway, Foggy getting knocked down was really funny. Poor Foggy... You know, someone should start a Foogy fan club or something. It's no secret that you have a crush on the guy, and I really have a soft spot for him too. Laughing

...I wonder how did you reach that conclusion!

Actually, I don't have a crush on him... "crush" just falls short to describe the overwhelming passion the Fogster makes me feel LOL

I wasn't kidding when I said that I liked your reviews Dave! Laughing Believe it or not, but I actually read them before getting the book and I found them to be virtually spoiler-free! Actually, that's kind of the definition of a good review in my opinion. Reviews should make you curious about whatever product is being reviewed without diminishing your enjoyment of it. A lot of the movie reviewers these days who get a lot of (well-deserved) criticism for revealing too much of the movie seem to be missing this point.

Thanks, that's very kind.

I agree with you about spoilers - I think it's always a good idea to avoid them in reviews if at all possible. (My review of the latest issue of Daredevil breaks that rule, but only because there was a plot development which was impossible to discuss in depth without explaining what it was).

Laughing Yes, I'm familiar with that thread. Even if people would probably suspect that you have a thing for Foggy before even reading that thread, it pretty much proves just how passionate you really are.

Seriously though, I was just re-reading some of the early Frank Miller stuff the other day, and in so many ways Foggy is a much better friend than Matt deserves. Like when he doesn't want to even talk to Matt because he's so ashamed of how badly their firm is doing despite his every effort to keep things going. Meanwhile, Matt's appearances in the office are so sporadic that he is more reminiscent of a moody teenager who's skipping class every other day.

Not to mention how quick he was to forgive Matt for not telling him about his secret life. There were a couple of issues, I think, between his finding out about it and the two of them actually talking about it. I don't know how many days that translates into, but Foggy went around for quite a while thinking that Matt was only pretending to be blind (which is really quite a bit worse than the lesser evil of seriously downplaying his special powers). I can't even imagine how stupid that must have made him feel.

What can I say, if everyone were like Foggy Nelson, this world would be a lot happier... Wink

Foggy is probably a better friend than Matt deserves, yeah.

I still love that Foggy-centric issue from the middle of Miller's run. Lots of fun.

Christine, if you don't mind. I'll transfer, and answer, your latest comments to the Nelson thread

"Guts"... Lol, one of my favourites, I just loved the mock-chandleresque tone of the narration, and it has such a priceless Foggy-Fisk "confrontation" Laughing

Incidentally, as Christine, I quite enjoy your reviews: keep with the good work!

I'd love to see a good mini on Foggy, or better still, minis around DD secondary chatacters (I'm sure that a number of people here would sign for a Dakota or Black Tarantula series, or even better, a Dakota/LaMuerto team-up! Wink )

Incidentally, and back to topic: anyone has noticed that "Dr. Watts" in the series has a... certain resemblance with Mr. Dan Didio?
