Issue SummarySummary by Gloria PortaAt Sing Sing, "Big Ben" Donovan resolutely refuses Matt Murdock's offer to be his lawyer: again and again he reject's Matt's arguments by stating that he's not innocent of the charges, and that he deserves the capital punishment. As words won't persuade Matt, Donovan resorts to physical violence and the prison guards have to restrain him. Dakota North is at her home conferring with Luke Cage when she receives an unexpected visit: Matt, who has got a few bruises himself for trying to look into the Donovan case. Matt and Dakota conclude that there's something that Donovan fears more than death itself, and ponder whether he's acting as a front for something (or... someone?) else. They both agree to check things further. The diner near Sing Sing, Dakota discovers, has security cameras, and thanks to this, now she's got an image of her agressor. Then she visits Alex Kurtz in his office. Kurtz is still reluctant about blessing her involvement in the Donovan case: he's pretty convinced that Donovan is guilty, given the life he's lead. While Dakota and Kurtz are arguing, a colleague of Kurtz casually identifies the man in the picture: It turns out that Dakota's aggressor is a Federal agent. Matt discreetly meets Ben Urich for some information, and gets from him an interesting tip: Henry Callinan, the missing father of the murdered children is a dock worker. Matt ponders how he could support three kids on his own with a dock workers' salary. Dakota presents herself to the FBI agent who attacked her, and gives him a nice impersonation of Bat-Woman, scoring a home run in the process. However, she doesn't tell her much, except that she'd better stay out of the case. The FBI guy is not alone in that, for when miss North gets back to her appartment she's got a visit: Samuel J. North, her estranged father, and yet another person who tells her to quit... Papa North thinks Dakota has bitten more than she can chew. Daredevil checks bars at the waterfront, looking for information in his own inimitable way. As he interrogates the patrons, a minor thug watches him from the window and reports to his boss, which is none other than Eric Slaughter, a criminal leader who has crossed paths with the Crimson Avenger in the past. Back at Sing Sing, things are frantic: the guards have just stopped an attempted suicide by Big Ben Donovan. "No... Let me die" he begs. |
